Text Messaging with Dr. Harrington
Your kid just did something that made you stop and wonder.
Is this normal? Should I call someone? Can it wait?
You don't want to sit on hold for the nurse line. You don't want to go down a Google rabbit hole at 7 pm. You just want to ask a doctor you trust—quickly, directly, and without it turning into a whole thing!
That's exactly what this is. Text me, and I'll answer. No appointment, no waiting room, no middleman.
Currently available to Minnesota families only. Medical licensing rules—not personal preference!

What the Texting Membership Actually Gets You
For one flat monthly fee—covering your whole family—you get:
Unlimited questions about any of your kids, anytime they come up
Direct access to me—not a nurse, not a triage system, not an AI bot
Personalized, evidence-based answers so you can make confident decisions
Access to a member resource page with educational guides and handouts
A reduced rate on virtual consults for when you need more face time
A pediatrician who knows your family—not a stranger reading your chart cold
Beyond answering questions, I can help you decide whether your child needs to be seen in person, make sense of advice from your doctor or a specialist, review test results, and help you prepare for upcoming appointments. Think of it as having a knowledgeable friend who happens to have 20 years of pediatric experience—and who's always happy to hear from you.
Is This Membership Right for Your Family?
This is a great fit if you:
Have a child under 22 years old (special exceptions for special needs children)
Live in Minnesota (medical licensing rules mean I can only see patients in-state—not personal preference!)
Already have a primary care provider—this is a supplement, not a replacement
Find yourself Googling symptoms at odd hours and wishing you could just ask someone real
Have ever sat on hold with the nurse line and thought there has to be a better way
Real Questions. Real Answers.
Here's the kind of thing I hear from members every day:
"She's had a fever for two days—is this still normal or should I be worried?” Fevers, colds, coughs, sore throats, stomach bugs, rashes, pinkeye, swimmer's ear, allergy symptoms—all of it. I can even prescribe medication when it's appropriate, without you ever leaving the house.
"He fell and it’s bleeding. Does this need stitches?" Mild injuries, cuts, scrapes—I'll help you figure out whether it needs attention, or just a bandage and some time.
"Our doctor said something at the visit and I left more confused than when I went in." I can help you decode what a specialist recommended, what lab results actually mean, and what questions to ask before your next appointment.
"I just need someone to tell me if this is normal." Development, behavior, feeding, sleep—all the questions that don't fit neatly into a 15-minute well visit.
I've got you 💕
“I cannot speak highly enough of Dr. Harrington. She is approachable, an excellent listener, and never makes you feel like an overanxious parent.”
-Meghan K., mom to 3 & 7 year old
What I Can't Do Virtually
I want to be upfront about this, because I think honesty builds better relationships than overpromising:
Ear infections and strep throat require an in-person exam—I can't diagnose these over text
Emergencies belong with 911 or your clinic's after-hours line
Ongoing mental health diagnosis and treatment is outside my scope here
This service doesn't replace your child's regular primary care visits
If something feels emergent, please reach out to emergency services. I'll always tell you honestly when something needs to be seen in person.
When to Expect a Response
I'm available 7am to 8pm, and you can generally expect a reply within about 2 hours—however, it’s usually much faster! If you text after 8pm and I happen to be awake and available, I'll often answer anyway. But I don't monitor messages overnight, so anything late evening will be first up in the morning.
I'm a one-woman show with a family of my own, and my members are genuinely respectful of that. It works because everyone involved is a reasonable human being. 😊

A: A: When you call your doctor's office with a question, you typically leave a message, wait for a nurse callback, and may never actually speak to the doctor. With the texting membership, you're communicating directly with me—a board-certified pediatrician—every single time. No middleman, no playing phone tag, no being told to just come in. You can send me questions and photos, get my impression, and in many cases get treatment, all in one interaction.
-
A: Most telehealth services match you with whoever's available. With Your Pediatrician Friend, you always get me—the same doctor, every time, who knows your kids and your family's history. I keep my membership intentionally small so I can actually deliver that. You're not a ticket in a queue. You're a family I know.
-
A: I keep my membership intentionally limited—nothing like the 2,000+ patient load I carried in traditional practice. A much smaller patient panel means I can actually be responsive and personal, which is the whole point. My members are also genuinely respectful of my time, and that makes the whole thing work. It's a relationship, not a call center.
-
A: You can generally expect a reply within about 2 hours between 7am and 8pm—though it's usually much faster. If something comes up and I'm temporarily unavailable, I'll let you know. There will be the occasional real-life circumstance where I'm unreachable, because that's life—but it's the exception, not the rule.
-
A: For straightforward cases of pinkeye, swimmer's ear, eczema, ringworm, and impetigo, I can prescribe after a thorough text exchange (and sometimes we even jump on the phone!). That said, I practice virtual medicine responsibly—if my questions reveal something that needs to be seen in person, I'll tell you honestly and help you figure out the right next step.
-
A: Honestly, yes—maybe especially then. The families who get the most value from this membership aren't necessarily the ones with the sickest kids. They're the ones who appreciate having someone to text when something comes up, who want to feel confident rather than anxious, and who'd rather spend two minutes texting me than two hours wondering. Peace of mind has real value.
-
A: Absolutely. A virtual consult is a great way to get a feel for how I work before signing up for ongoing access. Every consult also includes follow-up texting—so you'll get a genuine preview of what membership feels like before you decide.
-
A: I hold a medical license in Minnesota, and regulations don't allow telemedicine across state lines. Other services operate in multiple states because they employ providers licensed in many states—at Your Pediatrician Friend, it's just me. Minnesota only for now!
-
A: No—I'm a direct-pay practice. I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance company or HSA for potential reimbursement, but I don't bill insurance directly and can't guarantee reimbursement.
-
A: Your card is charged at sign-up and automatically renews monthly or every three months depending on the plan you choose. Cancellation is available anytime—your membership will remain active through the end of your current billing cycle and won't renew after that. To cancel, see the cancellation policy link at the bottom of the page.
-
A: Yes—any time I prescribe medication I send a visit summary to your regular doctor. I think it's important that your child's primary care team always has the full picture.
-
A: Your Pediatrician Friend is entirely virtual. All communication happens via secure text messaging, with virtual consults available as an add-on when you need more face time.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Dr. Kate Harrington
Hi! I'm Dr. Kate Harrington—board-certified pediatrician with 20 years of experience and the person behind Your Pediatrician Friend.
I created this practice because I believe every parent deserves direct access to a real doctor—not a nurse line, not a Google spiral, not an AI bot, and not a two-week wait just to ask a question. When something is going on with your kid, you deserve a straight answer from someone who actually knows what they're talking about and genuinely cares about your family.
I spent two decades in a traditional practice fielding these exact questions—the "is this normal," the "should I be worried," the "my doctor said it was fine but I just needed to hear it again." The texting membership exists because I wanted to make that kind of access available to every family, not just the ones lucky enough to catch me in the hallway.
I'd love to be in your corner 💕
