Could it be a broken arm?!?

Does your heart sink when your child takes a tumble and lands on an outstretched arm? You’re not alone.

Falls from bikes, scooters, playgrounds—really anything—are super common during the summer. And yes, sometimes broken bones happen. But how do you know when it’s serious enough for a trip to the ER?

Watch for these signs:

  • The arm looks bent or misshapen

  • Significant swelling

  • They can’t move it

  • Intense pain

The good news? Many falls lead to minor injuries like sprains or a buckle fracture—the most common type of pediatric break. It sounds scary, but buckle fractures are stable, don’t need surgery, and usually don’t even need a cast. Just a splint and some rest, and they’ll be back on their bike in no time!
